Salamander and Newt Trade Ban

The Southern Crested Newt (Triturus karelinii), one of the 201 species listed on the ban to help prevent Bsal from arriving to the U.S.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife has issued a provisional ban on the trade of 201 species* of salamanders and newts to help control the spread of the infectious disease Batrachochytrium salamandrivolans, otherwise known as Bsal. This newly discovered chytrid fungus has devastated wild populations of fire salamanders in Europe and has been detected in caudates in the pet trade. To prevent the disease from harming salamanders and newts in the United States, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has banned the importation of 201 commonly traded newt and salamander species as well as their trade between States.

Emperor Newts

Captive Emperor Newts (Tylototriton shanjing) being cooled terrestrially prior to breeding. For newt breeders, the interstate ban on trade will make selling and trading animals especially difficult.

This is a blow to amphibian breeders and caudate hobbyists, but for good cause.  The easiest way for Bsal to arrive to the U.S. is via the pet trade and if the disease arrives it will be devastating to our native caudates. The southeast U.S. is especially rich in salamander species, supporting the highest species diversity anywhere in the world. If you care about amphibians, this new interim rule should give you hope that we may be able to prevent Bsal from arriving to the States, though if you are an avid newt and salamander hobbyist the provisional ban on interstate trade will make it much more difficult to acquire new species and sell or trade those you produce.
